The collection contains correspondence, financial papers, a minute book, 1889-1894, and miscellaneous papers. Correspondence generally concerns "Necessity" subscriptions and articles, the Fredericksburg District Alliance Exchange, membership, and the effect of government bills on farmers. Of interest are letters pertaining to "The Farmer's Institute"; the People's Party in Virginia; a proposal to run "Necessity" in conjunction with the "Southern Planter"; the Alliance's political impact, especially on Democrats; the progress of the Old Hickory chapter; exclusion of merchants as members; the Ocala platform; Richmond turnpikes; commercial sheep raising; and free coinage and sub-Treasury bills, 1890-1891. The collection also contains an Alliance Fertilizer Works prospectus, a State Business Exchange proposal, and a list of stockholders in the Fredericksburg Exhange.
